WHAT PERSONALISED TRAIL RUNNING WEAR DO YOU NEED?

The great mountain runner Jessed Hernandez has been running in the mountains for 15 years, and competing in some of the best events in the world of mountain racing for 14 years.

Jessed, who has won a long list of sports events, and in a video shot in the Pyrenees, at 2800 metres above sea level, between the border of Andorra and France, he explains what kind of clothing you need for the different types of mountain races (vertical KM, medium distance and ultra racing). And he does so wearing the different ranges of extreme running outfits and custom trail wear from Inverse.

According to Jessed Hernández, there are basically three types of mountain races: the vertical kilometre, medium distance or half-marathon, and the so-called ultra races.

PERSONALISED OUTFITS FOR VERTICAL KILOMETRE RACES
Vertical kilometre (VK) races are over a distance of between 2 and 6 kilometres, and the altitude difference is generally 1,000 metres. For these types of races, you need to wear very light clothes, with sleeveless shirts and shorter pants. You don’t need pockets in the pants for this type of racing, as you don’t have to carry gels as the distances are very short and very explosive. Inverse has two types of customisable shirts for this type of race: the sleeveless RACE trail running top that guarantees total freedom of movement with a technical anti-abrasion fabric, and the versatile sleeveless EXTREM top for both trail events and running, which has a technical fabric with a high drying capacity and is more suitable for competitions with extreme heat.

PERSONALISED WEAR FOR MEDIUM DISTANCE RACES, HALF-MARATHONS AND MARATHONS
Medium distance or half-marathon races tend to be between 10 and 23 kilometres long. And mountain marathons are between 30 and 42 kilometres long. In this case, you do need pants with quite a few pockets that you can take full advantage of to carry gels, mobile phones or even flasks for liquids in races with few refreshments, for example. The shirt should be short-sleeved to avoid any possible sunburn, with a zip on the neck to adjust the ventilation; Inverse’s RACE model has an ultralight and anti-abrasive fabric, and allows you to include a protective grip in the shoulder pads.

PERSONALISED WEAR FOR LONG DISTANCE OR ULTRA RACES.
Long distance or ultra races tend to be between 50 and 200 kilometres long. The clothing to compete in an ultra event must be ultra light, and made from highly breathable fabric because of the long time involved in the race. Here a protective grip on the shoulder pads of the shirt to carry the front backpack with flasks of liquid is a very good idea. The top should also have an extra pocket that is bound to come in use. The trousers must also have as many pockets as possible (for example, you need space for a headlamp that you usually have to carry, or a thermal blanket that is very important in the event of an accident to avoid hypothermia) without these making the runner uncomfortable and which ensure the maximum comfort.
